Lighthouses, maritime museums, theater and scenic drives — the region's essential sights, with access notes and sources.
The sights worth planning around
Door County's best-known attractions are spread along the whole peninsula, so it helps to group them by shore rather than by reputation. The lighthouse trail runs from Sturgeon Bay north to Rock Island; the theater and gallery trail clusters around Fish Creek, Ephraim and Egg Harbor; the scenic drive is the road between them.
This page lists the publicly managed places first. Individual galleries, shops and restaurants change their seasons and hours, so use the community guides for those and confirm details directly.
Lighthouses
Eleven historic lights stand along the county's shoreline. These are the ones with public access or a clear view from land.
Baileys Harbor · built 1869
Cana Island Lighthouse
The county's most photographed light stands on a nine-acre island reached by walking a stone causeway. The Door County Maritime Museum operates it as a historic site and opens it for tours from May through October.
Good to know The causeway is a walk, not a road. Wear shoes that can get wet.
Inside Peninsula State Park, Eagle Bluff is the easiest lighthouse to reach on foot or by bike. Keepers manned the light until 1926, when the mechanism was automated.
The red North Pierhead Light (1882) stands at the Lake Michigan end of the ship canal; the Canal Station tower (1899) is on the northern bank. The lower walkway is open to the public, while the grounds are fully open during the annual Lighthouse Walk in June.
Two aligned lights guided boats into the harbor for a century: when the upper and lower lights lined up, a skipper knew the water was safe. The grounds are open; the structures are not.
Wisconsin's oldest lighthouse sits at the north end of Rock Island State Park. It is open daily in summer, and the island is reached by a second ferry from Jackson Harbor on Washington Island.
The last manned lighthouse on the Great Lakes, automated in 1983. It is open to the public only during the June Lighthouse Walk and otherwise serves as a military rest facility.
The Door County Maritime Museum runs three sites: its main museum on the working waterfront in Sturgeon Bay, Cana Island Lighthouse in Baileys Harbor, and the Death's Door Maritime Museum at Gills Rock. Together they cover shipbuilding, commercial fishing and the dangerous passage that gave Death's Door its name.
For a land-based half day, the Sturgeon Bay waterfront is the natural start. The city's maritime identity goes back to its 1835 waterfront settlement and its role as a shipping hub; the museum sits within that working landscape rather than apart from it.
Culture and the scenic drive
Peninsula State Park
Northern Sky Theater
Summer performances take place in the state park, which makes a theater evening easy to combine with a beach afternoon.
County-wide
Galleries and studios
The peninsula has a long artist tradition. Fish Creek, Ephraim and Egg Harbor concentrate the galleries and shops.
66-mile loop
Door County Coastal Byway
The signed route connects three state parks, ten county parks, beaches and shoreline villages. Designated in 2010.
